DK Shivakumar on Why People from Delhi, Mumbai Are Moving to Bengaluru
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar highlighted Bengaluru’s status as a global knowledge and investment hub at the Times Now Summit 2025, urging greater central support for the city’s economic and infrastructural growth.
Bengaluru: A Knowledge Powerhouse
Shivakumar emphasized the city's historical significance in research, innovation, and industry. He pointed out that institutions like ISRO, HAL, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), and the National Law School were established in Bengaluru due to its strong knowledge pool. He credited leaders from Jawaharlal Nehru’s time for recognizing the city's potential.
Despite not being a planned city like Delhi, Bengaluru continues to attract top companies due to its skilled workforce and climate. He noted that even Fortune 500 companies chose Bengaluru as a headquarters location after conducting global surveys, citing its lack of communal tensions and stable investment environment post-9/11.
Bengaluru’s Appeal to Migrants from Other Cities
Shivakumar explained that many people from Delhi and Mumbai are moving to Bengaluru, selling their properties in those cities. He attributed this trend to Bengaluru’s pleasant weather and unique culture, which he believes are unmatched anywhere in India.
Urging greater investment in the city’s infrastructure, Shivakumar reaffirmed Bengaluru’s role as India’s leading knowledge and business hub.
