Karnataka to Resume Full 10 kg Rice Distribution Under Anna Bhagya Scheme

The Karnataka government is set to fulfill a major pre-poll promise by resuming the full 10 kg rice distribution under the Anna Bhagya scheme. The announcement was made by Karnataka’s Minister for Food, KH Muniyappa, during a press conference at Vidhana Soudha. This move marks the end of the temporary cash transfer arrangement that had been in place since last year.

Full Rice Distribution from February

Starting this month, beneficiaries under the Below Poverty Line (BPL) category will receive the promised 10 kg of free rice. The state government had previously provided a monthly cash allowance of ₹170 per person in lieu of the additional 5 kg of rice, but this will be discontinued as direct rice distribution resumes.

The decision follows the central government’s approval to supply the required additional quantity of rice. Karnataka needs approximately 2.29 lakh metric tonnes of rice per month, translating to 27.48 lakh metric tonnes annually, to meet the demand of beneficiaries.

Fulfilling a Key Promise

The Anna Bhagya scheme is a crucial welfare initiative aimed at ensuring food security for economically weaker sections. The reintroduction of full rice distribution is expected to benefit thousands of households across the state. This development reinforces the government’s commitment to improving food accessibility and reducing dependency on monetary allowances, which were a temporary measure due to rice supply constraints.

With this move, Karnataka’s government takes a significant step towards fulfilling its electoral promises and ensuring that no eligible beneficiary is deprived of essential food grains.
